Bloom Where You Are Planted: A Spring Inspiration
Written by Liza Gresse, CEO of the UBUHLE Group
In South Africa, Spring has sprung. The days are warmer, the sun rises earlier, and we can feel the gentle stirring of new life all around us. On my early morning walks, I’ve begun noticing signs of nature slowly awakening from its winter rest. Trees wear a fresh cloak of green and delicate buds peek out as if to say, “I’m ready.”
This past Saturday, after a soul-nourishing visit to my local nursery, I returned home and filled my garden pots with vibrant spring flowers and a medley of herbs. There is something deeply grounding in gardening – the feel of fresh soil clinging to your fingers, the quiet joy of nurturing life, and the silent miracle of watching tiny petals unfold under your care.
And then a thought struck me: These flowers had no say in where they were planted.
They didn’t choose the pot, the corner of the garden, or even their neighbouring plants. And yet, they bloom – boldly, beautifully and unreservedly.
What a profound lesson that is.
In life, we often find ourselves in places we didn’t choose. We don’t always get to decide our circumstances, our workplaces, our colleagues, or the neighbourhoods we live in. but we do get to choose how we respond. We decide whether to bloom in defiance of our circumstances – or in deep response to them. It’s our choice: to bloom not because conditions are perfect, but because we are willing.
Every day on my way home, I pass a Pride of India tree – standing quietly next to a dilapidated hall, along a rural road. The surroundings are far from grand. And yet, this tree is bursting with brilliant pink blossoms, unapologetically joyful, offering beauty to every passerby.
It doesn’t bloom because the environment is perfect.
It blooms because it can.
And that’s how I want to be.
Even if you don’t live in the most expensive suburb, even if you don’t have the biggest house, even if you’re not in the most prestigious job or the highest-paying position — choose to be like the Pride of India tree.
Bloom anyway. Share your beauty. Give joy in abundance. And positively impact the space around you.
